Sunlight falls across the tall trees above my father-in-law’s house. You can see more pictures of one of the most beautifully crafted Humboldt Homestead by clicking here or here.
From this angle, the greenhouse does look like an igloo, but if you follow the links, there is a closeup from another angle and that view of the greenhouse gives you the impression you are entering a great cathedral.

My God!!! Another winner.
So, I showed all your pics to The Redneck and he LOVES them. You need to make that calendar and sell them. Sign us up for four or five that we’ll give as gifts. Brilliant, Kym. Absolutely brilliant.
When I visited him a few weeks back, it was the first time I had been there in 9 years or more. The greenhouse back then was still unfinished, and to see it all finished and filled with plants was really a treat.
I cut the wood for the front door on the main house, way back when. It is incense cedar heartwood, 2″ thick and as wide as we could get it. Only two pieces were needed. And it is as light as a feather. Well, almost…
I have been wanting to get around to all of the houses that I contributed custom sawing to and take pictures and write a book. Cutting the pieces for the round house was an interesting project.
This is incredible, coolness touched with gold. The details are so sharp. This is a favorite. Also, the first time I ever read your blog it was the post with all the pics of the details of your father-in-law’s house. I was enthralled. It is how I wish to live, with all the homely details of my life made beautiful.
Kym …The photo looks like the cover of a science fiction novel. That greenhouse is absolutely amazing and each pane of glass has a top and bottom curve. A daunting piece of work and lovely.
I would also purchase a calendar!!! Your father-in-law’s home is wonderful. I would have never thought to add a bathtub to the greenhouse…. But it sure makes sense. Even the yard gates are wonderful! Question: How does the glass roof open? I know that it is a hand crank but does it raise the glass up and off of the dome? Ben is correct in that the picture looks other-worldly. I love the way the greenhouse blends in with the environment.
Holy shit, what a photograph! As one who at an early age tried to earn a living taking pictures, I gotta say you are one hell of a photographer. It’s all about the light and patience. Humboldt gives you the light, but trudging up the hill to be there when the light creates it’s magic is all you. Thanks for the Holiday smile.
Thanks you all. I did make a calendar and blehhh, maybe I don’t know how to choose shots, maybe the place did a crappy job but I’m not going to be selling any of those. Maybe when I get better.

I didn’t know he lived in an igloo!

PS, the sun shining on the tips of the trees is gorgeous.

I looked at your other pictures of his place. Wow is right. I totally want the greenhouse. And the front door. And that sunrise window.
This picture is gorgeous, too. Definitely calendar or Christmas card material. Drooooolllllll!
When I first looked at it, I thought that was an igloo, too.

I’ve only met and known a handful of artists with cameras in my life.
I’m adding you to that short list. To paint with the eye, heart, and soul, in the camera medium, is a feat most people can never perform.
It appears to me that the time for sharing your work (i.e., calendars, etc.) is here. Share your visions with more people.

I love the way the light colors this picture. You have a gift for capturing beauty Kym. I’d buy a calender!

What a neat shot! It reminds me of a little Christmas village or a visit to the secret Santa Shop a the North Pole!

Oh come on. Do you really expect us to believe that this is real? It’s a model. It has to be.
No one lives someplace that looks this lovely so many days (and photographs) in a row.

I hadn’t seen all those photos of the homestead before. It really is a work of art!

That looks more like a painting for a scifi story cover than like an actualy photograph you are doing really startling things with light and color.

Great pic! What time of day did you take the picture because the top of the trees are so illuminated but the rest of the picture is darker and bluer.
Posted by Chris on December 22, 2008 at 1:26 pm
I second what Max said…looks like scifi. Amazing…
